Fuji 56mm Vs Canon 85mm 1.8

April 24, 2015 ohm

This thread is raging at DPReview right now, precisely because Canon's second-tier 370$ USD F/1,8 85mm lens from 1992 draws very similarly, and certainly with less DOF than Fujifilm's top-of-the-line 1000$ USD F/1,2 56mm XF lens.

OP Stoneh Ray's camera settings are problematic, but the basic draw styles tell what needs to be told: unless cost, size, weight, and generational misalignment are ignored, equivalence never favours smaller formats.

What short memories we have. Surely you saw these around. I did. But then I'm 35, and you may be 23. Anyway, the selfie stick isn't new. The BBC tell us how it came about twice:

The Nikon 105mm f/2,5 AiS as a landscape lens

Dilapidated barn, Holsbybrunn.jpg

I picked up the Nikkor 105mm f/2,5 F-mount lens sometime in 2010. I was told that it was glass made for portraits. I was told that it had buttery bokeh, and sharpness and colour out the wazzoo. Cool beans I said.

Softbox for the Fuji X100 series internal flash!

April 17, 2015 ohm

DPReview member, Thomas D, has constructed a mini softbox for his Fuji X100. While he has uploaded with/without photos showing how the softbox softens wall shadows, he has yet to post photos of more appealing subjects. I'm looking forward to seeing how well his softbox works.

Fujifilm XF 16mm 1.4 R WR - servile journalism; and a sign that X is all right

April 17, 2015 ohm

Press Releases agree: Fujifilm's new fast wide-angle will go for 999,95$ USD. It will be compared to lenses that cover larger image circles with the same apertures. Equivalists and optic-speed-or-deathist will argue till blue in the face.

Camera rumour sites: TIPA Awards are not news

April 14, 2015 ohm

Fujirumors, Canon Watch, Sony Alpha Rumors, et al, TIPA Awards are like pre-school: show up and you get candy. At their most stringent, they are like those everyone-that-signs-up-wins scholarships.

Full disclosure: it doesn't hurt to try. If you're a cash-strapped student in a land that requires you pay for post-secondary, hit up as many gimme scholarships as you can. If you're a camera manufacturer desperate to tell your most ardent supporters that they should still purchase from you, hit up as many gimme awards as you can. I recommend TIPA.

TIPA's website explains how to apply:

“By informing TIPA members about the launching of new products, you will automatically be considered for a TIPA Award. So be sure to keep information flowing on a regular basis.”

Yep, keep the information flowing. That's it.

Kudos to 43s Rumors in 2014 for pointing out that everyone wins. And shame on them for pointing out the cameras that actually won.

Rumour sites: stop 'reporting' this stuff. It negatively impacts your own brand, and seriously fails at fulfilling the quality requirement of 'content is king' publishing.

Nikon: "We don’t deny that this may be an option in the future"

DPReview's review shot for the D300s

DPReview's review shot for the D300s

And the prize for the biggest waste of DPReview's time, and dodging of important questions goes to Nikon.

And the baldest face lie of the entire interview is this: "We don’t consider that we manufacture more FX than DX lenses" in response to DPReview's pointing out that Nikon continues to release more FX than DX lenses.

Worthless.

Over-reliance on user-programmable interfaces is part of the race to the bottom

April 10, 2015 ohm

Thom Hogan's article from 8 April, entitled: Price is the Problem? reiterates one of the many problems camera makers face: addressing the usability of their cameras. Advances in megapixels and benchmarkable performance metrics such as dynamic range and high ISO performance are not the iterative improvements camera users really need. Current silicon is more than capable. Thom recently essayed on that very topic.
