Fujifilm X100s for still life

I am a still life photographer and my needs in a mirrorless camera are vastly different to the majority of photographers. They are probably much simpler than yours. A very few are sophisticated. The first things I check for in a still life camera are: a good WiFi app, a decent flip-out screen, and the ability to pan and zoom at 100% magnification.

A few words about the Novoflex BALPRO T/S

Canon EF mount, Balpro T/S, and M39 enlargement lens

Canon EF mount, Balpro T/S, and M39 enlargement lens

Note: I have published Part 1: stability and stacking of the BALPRO T/S review

When I picked up the Sony A7r to replace the Nikon D800 for work outside my studio, I purchased the Novoflex F - Sony NEX mount adapter and ASTAT quick release system. Why? Novoflex's modular systems work hand in hand with one another. They serve a greater vision that, in the long run, serves the photographer.

Novoflex is the Transformers of the adapter world.

The Novoflex BALPRO T/S system and a few, tiny M39 enlargement lenses, will replace my current on-the-road system of bulky, expensive tilt-shift lenses.

No, BALPRO is not cheap, but it is modular. It is well machined. It is far more stable than the Horseman VCC Pro, and seems to be reliable even for my somewhat heavy image stacking requirements. While it doesn't offer the free-ranging movements of a 4x5 camera, it is rock solid, and in many ways, less frustrating than an unmodified tilt shift lens.

In the coming months, all strobe photography will be shot with the BALPRO and A7r system. Even in studio, it will substitute my 4x5 camera.

A Sony NEX attached to an ICA A-G 215

As seen on DPReview, vk Photo's homebrew NEX - 9x12 plate adapter allows the melding of technology that is separated by a century. It is actually very similar to the system I use for commercial still life, the main difference is that my camera sits on a 4x5 camera via a sliding adapter.

The moral of the story? If you can adapt it, you can use it. And most decent old lenses are still good enough today.

Fujifilm X-T1p rumours false

June 23, 2014 ohm

Assuming this, too, isn't incorrect, Betteridge's law remains intact. Thank god, a p version of the X-T1, released to address issues/update months-old hardware, was an awful idea, even in rumour pulp.

Bon Voyage, Martin Irwin

Martin Irwin shooting a Toyota Celica in Akihabara

Today leaves my urban muse, a man that shows Tokyo in a light I never could see. Martin Irwin shoots elbows out, Sony A7r cracking in the bustle and smog of Tokyo; he is tall and built like a Leica. He is conspicuously conscious of all around him. His every move is calculated.

The Big Picture Gallery: The versatile Fuji Xt1

June 18, 2014 ohm

Beautiful venue captured in this small essay on the X-T1. The conclusion is right on:

“I love the mirrorless system, its not perfect but for image quality, form factor and operational ability, its a killer camera and never fails to impress me.”

Studio FD: Lightroom VS DXO VS Capture One studio RAW comparisons

Frank's comparison is helpful in sifting the plusses and minuses of each RAW developer as it pertains to studio shooting.

“Lightroom is awesome for keeping my catalogue, creating smart albums, books, printing etc. it’s in my opinion not beat by DxO and Capture One in that aspect, so without ANY doubt I would choose Lightroom for this purpose.

DxO is awesome for noise reduction, optical corrections with a click, adjustments via the autosettings, integration with filmpack and user styles are also very very good and the end results are just a big step above Lightroom, plus with the newest version the integration with Lightroom is almost seamless so you can now actually stay within Lightroom but still use DxO optics, a HUGE plus for the people that need speed but also want a big step up from Lightrooms processing power.

It seems that Capture One as a standalone (no integration with Lightroom) has the worst chance right?

Well not quite and this might surprise you, Capture One is actually my number one convertor at the moment, and I do LOVE optics 9.5 from DxO but with model photography it just can’t beat some of the things I have with Capture One, in the end it all boils down to a few things I have in Capture One that I don’t have in DxO or Lightroom and that make my life a LOT easier and editing a LOT faster.”

This is so unlike Leica

June 17, 2014 ohm

Perhaps Leica's American office is run to different standards.

“There’s a hole in the bottom of our camera! That’s OK though, it’s meant to be there. The bottom edge of the rechargeable lithium-ion battery serves as the compartment cover. Or at least it would, if we had one.

Sadly, while Leica’s PR representatives sent us the camera, two lenses, a mount adapter, EVF, several satin pouches and a battery charger, they forgot to include a battery in the box.

There’s simply nothing for it - tune in later for a Leica T reboxing, as soon as we’ve found the pouch that had the USB cable in it...*”
