… and hail Scheimpflug Thursday. Or Thursday Scheimpflug. As I’m publishing this first instalment under my audiophile blog, I’ll not rag on about the maths involved in utilising Scheimpflug. (As a former English Literature major, I’ve got to be honest: I’ve really nothing but applied physics - a term Martin Irwin taught me - under my belt anyway.)

I’m the sort of headphone geek that loves strong branding, comfort, and good sound - in that order. Over the last few years, I’ve become a Grado head. I now own the original PS1000, the RS1, the GR10, the GR8, and the GR8e.

For non-rockers - Grado PS1000

February 5, 2016 ohm

Flagship headphones don’t interest me. I’ve gotten on fine, and for the foreseeable future will get on fine with Beyerdynamic’s DT880/600. But, slowly, I’m becoming a Grado head. I love the RS series and the SR60. The GR10 is my favourite small-fit earphone and the GR8e is a brilliant follow up to the earphone that changed my mind about the company. Yes, the original GR8.

Which Grado GR10 do you have?

Please note: the metal cap really is silver, but looks gold because of a reflection. My bad.

Please note: the metal cap really is silver, but looks gold because of a reflection. My bad.

The above photograph is my Grado GR10. It is from 2014. It's front metal cap is silver and shines. There is a small port between its sheath and the cap. The older version lacks the port. And, like the GR8, its aluminium cap is matte, not shiny. The older version one can be seen below (photo taken by Headfi member CH23, seen in this Head-fi post):

Could be evidence of continual production kaizen, à la manière employed by Sennheiser in the HD series of headphones? And if so, are surreptitious updates a good thing?

As you know, I'm a big fan of the GR10. While the GR10 has many fans, some people are vehemently against it. And, if the changes noted at Head-fi truly return disparate results, it's understandable that opinions vary. I am  have tested the old GR10 vs. the new GR10.

And recently, Grado recently released the GR10e, which I think we can assume boasts further improvements. Later, I will be taking a look at the GR10e, and comparing it with the GR10, which many of you know is my favourite universal earphone.

The Grado GR10

July 24, 2014 ohm

Pretty little emerald

I had barely unboxed the GR10 before my wife was fondling it and telling me something every proud audiophile husband longs to hear from his siggy: "I want one". Our romance pretty much began with headphones. It wasn't exactly a minidisk swap, but it could have been. We've been jamming to trance and Broken Social Scene ever since. (She leaves John Denver to me.)

Headfonics: Grado goes "e" - an interview with Jonathan Grado

June 27, 2014 ohm

Grado fans, and fans of portable and home headphone audio everywhere, you owe it to yourself to get acquainted with Grado. Thanks to Headfonics' interview with Jonathan Grado, vice president of Grado's marketing department, you can. As many of you know, Grado aren't the typical commodity headphone maker. In their own words:

“We don’t come out with new headphones every 6 months, every year, etc. We don’t have a set revision timeframe. We found a way to make the sound better so we started expanding on that, and a few years later we had The e Series. We’d only come out with something new when we think it’s a worthy improvement and produces a sound we’re proud of.”

Alas, this modus operandi is practically nonexistent in the general headphone world. It is, in fact, anathema to the spam method employed by companies like Audio Technica and Sony, that make dozens upon dozens of models a year in order to keep a good display section up at Yodobashi.
