Another flickr photographer I've followed for a couple of years is the talented Masahiro Makino, a master of detail and delicacy. His work hones in on the unique and beautiful Japanese city of Kyoto. Mostly, Masahiro works in hi-contrast colour. He loves shallow focus, food, and rituals.
DPReview: OVF vs EVF at the Nikon Forum
Even at the Nikon forums, the debate is heating up. And god, is it mature.
Should I sell all my Nikon gear for a X-T1?
Fujifilm X-T1 with NIK-FX Speedbooster.
If only I had a yen for every time this question came up in the Fujifilm SLR/X series forum at DPReview, I'd... be able to buy a chocolate bar or two.
There are some good answers in the thread for anyone that looks for community consensus.
JCH: report from the ICS World Used Camera Fair in Tokyo
NOTE: JCH's image of a gold Contax RTS removed for the time being.
Getting side tracked with audiofoolery is keeping me out of freaking amazing events like the ICS used camera fair from earlier this month- that despite the fact that I live in the same crazy Tokyo. Fortunately, Japan Camera Hunter has its sites set straight. JCH's Bellamy reports, and shoots, from the ICS.
Sony ILCE-7r and the Leica Summilux 50 pre-ASPH
The Leica M9 which I've over-borrowed from Headfi's brilliant AnakChan, goes back in the next few days. I'll be honest and say that I didn't shoot much with it. Mainly, that is because I had to get used to, and if possible, like the Sony A7r which I purchased for its excellent live view system. I'll be honest and say that that didn't happen. I hate the Sony a7r today as much as I did when I first reviewed it. Its one saving grace is that is capable of making fine exposures.
Read moreNikon Capture NX-D RAW not a big hit with fans
No sooner did Nikon Rumors announce its availability than users began decrying the loss of certain features. Most notable is the loss of transfer features from camera to computer, and U-point adjustments. Nikon, who, as of Capture NX-D RAW's debut, will no longer support Capture NX 2, from its English FAQ, directs users to:
“Use the transfer function in ViewNX 2, or connect the camera to the computer and drag images to a folder on the computer.
There are no particular restrictions on the placement of RAW image files on the computer.”
It's good to know that we should expect future Nikon capture software to be fundamentally crippled.
DPReview: Hardware valuewise - X-T1 is a rip-off
More DPReview gold, this time from senior member, no fumble, who starts out with the following:
“Come on. It has APSC sensor, no mirror mechanism, no dedicate AF sensor, should be cheaper to make than an equivalent DSLR such as 70D. I do understand the low sale volume impact on price, but feature and value wise, it is a rip-off.”
How many pages this thread become is anyone's guess. I'm throwing in for 8. My current favourite retort is from veteran member, Ray Sachs, who uses similar, though flawed logic in his reply:
“A Ferrari should be cheaper than an old pickup truck. No bed for hauling stiff, no automatic transmission, and the damn thing probably doesn’t even have a decent stereo...”
My initial thoughts about the Fujifilm X-T1 find it to be an incredible camera. I've been enjoying it for almost two weeks. Is it perfect? No. But it is the most competent non-Leica mirrorless camera I have ever fondled. Its superiority to the Sony A7r, in everything but resolution, is ridiculous.
Colorless Impressions X100s tags
Something makes me think Pete Gardner would agree that Kingra Sado's X100s Colorless Impressions are worthy of a gander.
Thanks, Fujirumors.
Digital Rev: X-T1 hands-on review
Kudos to Kai for recognising the Contax RTS as the inspiration for the X-T1. Un-kudos to him for saying that the Olympus OMD-EM1 looks like a retro SLR. It doesn't.
